The Pentagon's investigating claims one of its officials illegally hired contractors in Afghanistan and Pakistan to track down and kill insurgents. Michael Furlong was only supposed to use them to gain local knowledge, as it's considered unlawful for the military to hire in covert spies. Pakistani Military Expert Tariq Birzada believes the scandal could undermine US goals in the region.

February 2009 Western forces are losing ground to the Taliban. As US and UK forces struggle for a way forward in Afghanistan, this unique film shows one of the most dangerous outposts as it struggles to hold on. Youre the first reporter Ive seen here in 8 months, says Staff Sergeant O Brien, in a rare break from the Talibans incessant fire. This outpost in Kunar province is one of hundreds supposed to allow the Americans to win over locals and control Taliban movements. But its not working. The Taliban control the high ground around the bunker and attack every day. Weve got the most sophisticated equipment in the world, O Brien says but we cant pick up on one guy whos sitting 800 metres away from us shooting. His men have spent 9 months under fire and must rely on what they can. One thing we usually use to determine who the bad guys are is shoe type, O Brien explains. They wear shoes like this to move around the mountains he says comparing it with the sandal worn by a member of the...

Digg this video: digg.com Eight years have passed since Laura Bush declared that "because of our recent military gains, women are no longer imprisoned in their homes" in Afghanistan. For eight years, that claim has been a lie. The truth is that American military escalation will not liberate the women of Afghanistan. Instead, the hardships of war take a disproportionate toll on women and their families. There are 1000 displaced families in a Kabul refugee camp, and they're suffering for lack of food and blankets. A few weeks ago, you generously gave $6000 to help and $9000 more is needed to take care of all 1000 families. Thats a donation of $15 per family to provide the relief necessary for their survival. Here's what your money will buy: * 5 kg (11 lb) ghee = $5.00 * 4 kg (8.8 lb) rice = $3.00 * 50 kg (110 lb) flour = $22.00 * A middle quality blanket = $10.00 * A middle quality tent carpet = $40.00 Donate: www.afghanwomensmission.org Learn more: rethinkafghanistan.com

August 2009 'The Sex Law' may have been watered down but forced marriage, domestic violence and rape still define life for most Afghan women. Now a fledgling women's rights movement is determined to change that legacy. It's more than 8 years since the Taliban ruled Herat but for many women here, life has barely changed. In this refuge called Voice of Women, Suraya tries to combat the abuse of women under President Karzai. 'Forced and child marriage has not reduced since 2001. Its still a common practice' says Suraya. For those not lucky enough to make it to her shelter, prison is the alternative. Young girls are charged with running away from home and adultery. 'Here rape is considered adultery' reveals Suraya. 12 year old Nadia says she 'doesnt know how to live' anymore after being raped and charged with adultery. Earlier this year President Karzai passed a law stopping women from going out without men, restricted their power of divorce and enforced sex at least every four days. He...

Sign the petition: rethinkafghanistan.com President Obama has committed 17000 more troops to Afghanistan. This decision raises serious questions about troops, costs, overall mission, and exit strategy. Historically, it has been Congress' duty to ask questions in the form of oversight hearings that challenge policymakers, examine military spending, and educate the public. After witnessing the absence of oversight regarding the Iraq war, we must insist Congress hold hearings on Afghanistan. Watch the first part from our full-length documentary that will serve as a driving force to help make oversight hearings a reality. Nato and Afghan troops are preparing for a major offensive against Taliban strongholds in southern Afghanistan. Ahead of the operation, thousands of civilians have fled their homes near the Marjah area of Helmand province. Many will be going to displacement camps near the capital, Kabul. But as Al Jazeera's David Chater reports, conditions there are dismal. Rations of firewood are scarce as temperatures plummet below zero at night.

August 2009 As Afghanistan prepares for an election, reporter Sean Smith joins the troops on Operation Panther's Claw. He finds them frustrated at the inexperience and lack of discipline of the Afghan National Army. Operation Panther's Claw has just begun. Objective: secure a small part of Helmand province, the Taliban heartland, before the Afghan elections. For the Black watch Regiment, they're facing not only an elusive and powerful foe, but a reluctant Afghan Army. 'They've searched these in two minutes' says Captain Brown as the ANA search homes for a Taliban arms cache. Tensions between the two armies are boiling over into open conflict. 'They are inherently idle' says Captain Brown. In Babaji the area is still far from safe. Metal detectors pick up Improvised Explosive Devices, the ied's that have killed more British soldiers this year than bullets. 'All the governments who've been in power till this moment couldn't bring peace' says an old man 'It's even worse now'. The...

Three days into the military offensive in Marjah, US Marines and their Afghan allies have come under repeated counter-attacks. Digg this video: digg.com When foreign policy is well-reasoned, we see attention given to humanitarian issues like housing, jobs, health care and education. When that policy consists of applying a military solution to a political problem, however, we see death, destruction, and suffering. Director Robert Greenwald witnessed the latter during his recent trip to Afghanistan--the devastating consequences of US airstrikes on thousands of innocent civilians. The footage you are about to see is poignant, heart-wrenching, and often a direct result of US foreign policy. We must help the refugees whose lives have been shattered by US foreign policy and military attacks. February 2010 As the latest Nato-Afghan push against the Taliban gets underway, the spotlight is turned onto the young medical teams struggling to save lives and keep up morale in remote outposts. Two-thirds of those serving in Afghanistan were still in school when the US declared war on the Taliban eight years ago. A young surgeon tells jokes as he struggles to stitch up a bleeding wound. There's a familiarity with the war given away by typical medics black humour and irreverence. This isnt my first rodeo, Ive done this before. However, not far beneath the surface of the jokes lies an increasing bewilderment about the purpose of this war. In terms of what were doing here now, its not clear to me that we have an overall end point that makes sense. When injured patients arrive at this remote field hospital, there is a golden hour in which to save their lives. After that time, their chances are slim. The group are under immense emotional and physical stress, and the latest surge by US...
