Bamboo Railway - Cambodia

November 2006 Enterprising locals in Battambang, Cambodia, have developed a unique railway. It's made from recycled tank wheels, small motorcycle engines and lashings of bamboo. Cambodia's main train service only runs four times a month and derailments are common. Little wonder locals prefer a different option. 'Norries' are little more than bamboo slabs with wheels and run on the state-built track. With a top speed of 50 km per hour, the norry network is far superior to the train. As one driver explains; "People like these because they're fast and on time". Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Cambodian Genocide - Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge

The photographs of the victims from the Cambodian genocide are what really haunt you. There's a huge discussion of this topic on my blog, www.vagabonding.com Here's an entry I wrote about this: Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, and Genocide in Cambodia During their three-year, eight-month, and 21-day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in modern history: - The entire population of Cambodia's urban areas was evacuated from their homes and forced to march into rural areas to work the fields. - Every man, woman, and child was forced into slave labor for 12-15 hours each day. - An estimated two million people (21% of Cambodia's population) lost their lives. Many of these victims were brutally executed; many more died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease. That these crimes were committed so recently (1975-1978) makes them all the more sickening. The country's scars are still plainly visible: - The population is suspiciously youthful (50% is under the age...

World Bank Report on Cambodia

Cambodia is emerging from decades of civil war and isolation. Helped by international programs aimed at reducing poverty, international donors this year alone have more than 600 million dollars to help the country. The World Bank coordinates much of Cambodia's aid plan. By focusing on empowering the poorest people and working with the government, private sector and civil society, assistance efforts are beginning to yield results.
Cambodia: SEX TRAP [EN]
Many trafficking stories continue in different brothels at different places. Girls and women who start working as a prostitute in one place, in many cases Phnom Penh, often move, forced or voluntarily, to other brothels. The freedom of movement according to one's own choice, as well as adaptation to the kind of work, seems to increase the longer the women stay in 'business'. The women working in brothels in the provinces can tell their stories more freely and more self-confidently than those who are new arrivals under the strict supervision of the meebon. A prostitute interviewed in a brothel in Kompong Som was sold several times to different brothels. She related: "I am a Cham woman. I was born in Vietnam. My parents have a small farm in Moat Chruk. I used to sell food to earn some money. At that time I had a boyfriend. I thought that he would be faithful with me, but he left me. I was very disappointed. Later, a lady who was the mother of a friend came to see me. She explained...

June 2008 At its peak in the 12th century, the Angkor kingdom spread across Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Laos and Vietnam. Angkor is the largest pre-industrial city known to man. So how did Angkor mysteriously disappear? It was the size of modern LA, a masterpiece of civil engineering. Forests were stripped and rivers removed to make way for temples, palaces and markets. Then, in a development that has long perplexed archaeologists, Angkor suddenly vanished. Now a recent study by the University of Sydney is re-examining Angkor using radar remote-sensing data from NASA. As archaeologist Damien Evans explains, the team's findings give a stark warning to Cambodia's corrupt and greedy rulers, and to modern societies worldwide. 'We are facing similar issues', says Evans, 'The same mistakes are being repeated today'. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Children are trafficked into cities from rural areas to become sex slaves or sex workers, or trafficked out to comparatively wealthy Thailand to work in Bangkok as beggars, domestic workers, or labourers on construction sites.
