Turkey's political leaders are looking at whether a ban on women wearing headscarves in universities should be lifted. The ban is the subject of fierce debate in the country - to some it's about freedom of expression, to others it's a threat to Turkey's secular constitution. But now, the ruling AK party appears to have enough support in parliament to overturn the ban. Zeynep Piyade is a primary school teacher - she gives us her views on why she thinks it's a woman's right to wear the headscarf wherever she wants.

While some in western society want the headscarf banned, the world's top fashion designers are embracing it as a trend. Headscarves, veils and other head coverings have featured in the collections of top (non-Muslim) fashion designers over the past two years, including Dolce Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, Paul Smith, Marc Jacobs and Vivienne Westwood. SAN JOSE, CA (KGO) -- Wearing a head scarf may have cost a Bay Area woman her job. Until Monday she worked at the popular apparel chain Hollister, but the teen says corporate told her religious head scarves do not fit with the company's image. Now she wants the feds to investigate. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has been asked to look into the woman's sudden termination. If the agency finds she was discriminated against, that could mean a federal lawsuit against Hollister's parent company, Abercrombie and Fitch. "I didn't realize it before, but I am different," said Hani. This is the first time she says she felt like an outcast and now, she wants to remain anonymous. "It did hurt," said Hani. The issue has not played out the same way in England, where there is a history of informal negotiation of the rights of minorities. A US reporter who interviewed the CHP deputy chairman published a portion of the interview on his blog recently and said that Onur Oymen compared the Muslim head scarf to Nazi brown shirts and Italian fascist Black Shirts. Oymen has denied that he made the comparison. /// US reporter Dion Nissenbaum had interviewed Oymen in his Ankara office at the CHP headquarters for an article titled "Turkish court threatens to oust government that lifted headscarf ban," which appeared on April 18 in the world section of the mcclatchy media group's Web site.
