Lao is a landlocked country and covered by high mountainous ranges but crises-crossed by many rivers and stream. The Mekong River flows through 1865 km of the country from north to south. And this inland waterway system provides great potential for hydropower development. Over half of the power potential in the lower Makong basin is contained with in Lao. With an area of some 236800 square kilometers, three-quarter of which is mountains and plateaus. The population of Lao PDR has reached 5218000. About 85% of the population are rural dwellers and the 1999 census revealed that there were 60.000 more...

Poverty is high in the small south-east Asian country of Laos, with 40 per cent of children stunted from malnutrition. But the country does have one trump card. Its mountains and rivers are ideal for dams, to produce energy that could be sold to power-hungry neighbours like Thailand. Critics claim these dams will block fish migration, cause massive environmental damage and affect millions of people who depend on the rivers to survive. But the Laos government is determined to press ahead, building eight hydro-electric projects on the Mekong river and another 50 on its tributaries. 101 East, with presenter Veronica Pedrosa, looks at whether the dams in Laos can lift a country out of poverty, or leave its people hungry.

The government in Laos recently passed a new law making it easier for foreigners to invest in the country and buy land. But some Laotians are concerned that the law puts the country in danger of being overrun, particularly by Chinese investors who have poured more than two billion dollars into Laos in the last nine years. Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from the capital, Vientiane.

The area that is now Laos was once made up of several small kingdoms, often a battleground between the more powerful Kingdom of Thailand and Empire of Vietnam. The states were first united under the French protectorate as part of the Union of French Indochina with Cambodia and the divided Vietnam of Tonkin, Annam and Cochinchina. In 1953 the country officially became the Kingdom of Laos but was soon torn by the war in Vietnam. At one point 3 different Lao princes led 3 factions; royalist, neutralist and communist. In 1975 the monarchy was overthrown by the communist Pathet Lao who declared the country the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The last King, Savang Vathana, died in a communist concentration camp. The Lao Royal Family in exile continues to advocate for the restoration of the constitutional monarchy and an end to the communist dictatorship.
