Myanmar has enacted legislation that bans Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader held under house arrest for 14 years, from standing in upcoming elections. Razali Ismail, a former UN special envoy to Myanmar, told Al Jazeera he was unsurprised by the move. Ismail played a key role in securing Suu Kyi's brief release from house arrest in 2002, but he resigned from his position in December 2005 after repeatedly being refused entry to the country. He spoke to Al Jazeera's Teymoor Nabili. (13 Mar 10)

Barack Obama has called on Myanmar's military rulers to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In Singapore on Saturday, Obama became the first US president ever to attend a meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN. That meeting was also attended by Myanmar's prime minister, General Thein Sein. Although the two men did not speak directly, as Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa reports, the fact they were in the same room signals a major shift in US engagement with Myanmar.

The Karen National Union, which is one of Myanmar's biggest rebel groups, has named a new leader following the murder of its chief. KNU general secretary, Mahn Sha, was shot dead at his home in the Thai border town of Mae Sot on Thursday. And, as Hannah Belcher reports, the secretary general's death is seen as a blow to the many tribal groups who are opposed to Myanmar's military government.
