He learned to play santour at Baghdad Musical Studies Institute and devoted his remaining academic years to teaching. He was awarded the Prize for Best Santour Player in Baghdad in 1976 and 1977. He left Iraq to continue other studies at Kodaly Institute in Hungary, where he became teacher. He has represented Iraq in many festivals, such as the Festival of Arab Music which took place in Baghdad in 1976 and 1977 and the seventh Cairo festival of Arab music in 1977.
