Sahba is from Iran and has been living in Los Angeles for the last 3 years. She shows us her two instruments, the Tar and Setar. We see the front and back of the instruments and the moveable frets and pegs. She plays the instruments for us as well. Also included is footage of Sahba on stage performing with Bahram Osqueezadeh on the Persian Santur and Rowan Storm on the frame drum. Please read before commenting: This is partly technical and partly humorous. Due to its thin neck and drone strings, it is difficult to play chords on a setar, it is also considered too foreign and non-lyrical. Bach popularized key changes to all 12 keys by writing sets of fugues and preludes for people to get attached to the idea. Middle eastern music, however, is similar to early music in being diatonic, modal and limited to a few keys, but it overcomes this by having an extra interval of 3/4 tone (140 cents to be exact) in addition to the whole and semi-tones and having a variety of scales. Since having too many frets or keys is not possible on any instrument (one would need 43 per octave for complete modulation freedom), the music has kept its medieval form. There was also probably no sense of need for polyphony in the middle eastern and most other musical cultures. Massoud Shaari's setar and Peyman Nasehpour's tonbak. This video clip is a part of their concert in the Festival of Improvisation Aug. 30th, 2001. nasehpour.com Massoud Shaari was born in 1961 in Tehran , Iran. From the very childhood, he was deeply attached to Iranian music and started learning Santur at the age of thirteen, taught by the lost artist Manijeh Ali-pour. After a while, he turned to learn Setar, monitored by Dariush Talai and has continued playing it ever since. In 1982, he begun learning Tar, taught by Mohammad Reza Lotfi, through whom he became acquainted with the art of Iranian traditional music systems (Radif) and its mysteries. In the meantime, he was honored to be trained by master Bahari and spent a while playing old pieces with him.
