When I started driving gas was 23 cents a gallon. Today sky's the limit. Those high prices represent supply and demand. In other words we're running out of gas, we're at the bottom of the barrel. We need to find alternatives. I met with Dr. Terry Walker, a bioprocess engineer at Clemson University who is researching alternative fuel sources. What we have here is a bio reactor that we're utilizing to convert switch grass, which is a common type of grass that has very high yields, fairly low nitrogen use, to be able to convert the cellulose material over to glucose, and then ultimately into ethanol. Okay so what basically we're doing is we're cooking switch grass in here. Okay maybe it's a bit more complicated than that. There's quite a bit of biotechnology involved and understanding the way nature puts this together into a structural form and then be able to break it down back into its components. Nature has produced these types of products for a reason. They're structural products...

The burning of switchgrass with coal as a renewable fuel to create energy is taking another huge step forward in Kentucky this winter. A research project from the University of Kentucky involving switchgrass, a native warm season perennial, is in the third year of a four-year study. This season's crop is by far the best following consecutive drought years and what they are doing with this year's harvest of switchgrass is bringing the goal of the project closer to reality.
Ethanol, corn, switchgrass, and sugar cane

The US government is requiring ethanol to be mixed with gasoline. Traditionally ethanol has been made with corn. Now some nations (Brazil) are using sugar cane to make ethanol. Now advocates are urging the use of switchgrass to make fuel (ethanol). The problem with using an agricultural product to make or supplement fuel, it that it takes farm land out of the food supply chain. Thus causing the price of agricultural products and live stock to rise. Meaning while the cost of fuel is rising so is the price of the food on your table. While we are sacrificing our farm land to produce fuel, we are leaving in the ground and offshore 400 year supply of oil untouched. This is because the environmentalist, the Democratic Party, and stupid Republicans, all are allowing this nonsense to continue.

There is a renewed interest in growing plants for producing ethanol and other biofuels, but the crops we grow may not be well suited to that purpose. A prairie grass called Switchgrass, bred years ago to help solve environmental problems with the infamous Dust Bowl might be part of the answer to our biomass needs. Plant breeders such as Mike Casler and Ken Vogel are hard at work developing the right green grass to turn into green gas. This video has been entered in the chlorfilms video contest at www.chlorofilms.org
